STATE COLLEGE, Pa — Health experts say coping with stress in a healthy way during the pandemic can be hard, but Center Region Parks and Rec decided to bring back a fitness program to help.
Instructors say Floyo is a mind body experience like no other. During the pandemic, high stress levels caused by fear and anxiety have left some with mental health issues. Health experts say one way to deal with it is exercise.
"Floyo is kind of floating yoga. So if you think of paddle board yoga, it's similar to that, but the difference being we are literally on floating mats," says Jessica Minelli, Floyo instructor.
She says the hardest part, balance.
After a short break, Centre Region Parks and Rec decided to bring back theFfloyo class this year at the Welch pool. Minelli says there was no better time than during the pandemic.
"The boards itself, allows for social distancing, because of the tethering you're not able to touch anyone else, you're in your own little bubble," says Minelli. "The opportunity to be outside and to be in a group setting in a safe way was appealing to a lot of people and that's why we decided to bring it back this summer."
Minelli says classes are limited to 8 participants, and mats are wiped down after each session. This all happening, before the pool is even open to the public.
The CDC says at this time, there is no evidence that the coronavirus can be spread through the use of recreational water. However, they still encourage social distancing, mask wearing, and safe swimming practices to protect yourself.
The Welch pools Floyo session for the month of August is currently full, however, they say there are still some spots on the waiting list.
